I’ve got to admit, I can’t stand this whole green apple cocktail phenomenon. I think these product lines of Jolly Rancher-flavored schnapps are ridiculous and do nothing for the world other than encourage binge drinking among teenage girls. And when a man walks into my bar and orders one, well, personally I think he becomes less of a man. But that’s just my opinion.

That said, I was still getting a lot of requests for them at Red Agave, so I came up with this as an alternative. It’s a vodka cocktail flavored with fresh green apple. No neon-green syrupy schnapps, just pure, fresh ingredients. And here’s how you do it:

I saw this drink a while ago, and thought “What a great idea. I wonder if it’s any good?” How wrong I was to doubt.

Being fall, this drink is perfect. I made it with a fresh apple from one of the many orchards up here, and muddled it. I haven’t tried it with a green apple (this one was red), but the thing that struck me was the texture; smooth and perfect.

I think I found my new fall drink.

There’s a bar in Pasadena called Twin Palms where anything with the word “martini” in it is made with gin. If you would like to order any sort of -tini that uses vodka, you have to order it by requesting a “smoothie.”

    Makes me laugh every time.

Indeed, it’s a winner. Ignore those bits of skin at the bottom – I was impatient and didn’t puree quite long enough.
