Yes, these are the words that I hear ringing in my ears as I find myself reading the news that Forbes Traveler has sympathetically chosen to include me in its very illustrious list of Cocktail Movers and Shakers this year.
Another drink-slinger who’s putting the Pacific Northwest on the cocktail map is Jeffrey Mortgenthaler[sic], bartender at El Vaquero in Eugene, Oregon. “There are amazing drinks being made in this region right now and people don’t really know about it.” He’s doing his best to change that. Of late, his favorite drink is an Old Fashioned using house-made orange bitters and his own brandied cherries.
I’m honored, truly. Thanks, Kirstin.
I stumbled across your blog during some insomnia-fueled search dive into trying to find info on one of my favorite frozen cocktails from El Vaquero. It had the smoothest texture and tasted like heaven. Prickly pear perhaps? If you see this and remember the drink I’d love to know about it!
Annie! The drink you’re thinking of is located here.
I know this is a very old thread but why in the world would anyone say such a dumbass thing?? I have been to both his establishment and yours. I can say that although different, both of you do an amazing job at cocktails. Hell I’d settle for a fraction of your talent or his. Watching me make a cocktail at home is like watching an old jerry lewis movie on acid… disturbing yet funny…
That’s very exciting. Congratulations!
Ooops.
I got sidetracked on my own thought and forgot to wish you a hearty congrats!
Nice one! The only thing I really hate about you is that you’re working in Eugene instead of Portland. Oh, and because I’ve spent a shitload of money on booze and other ingredients (what do I really need with seven kinds of bitters?) because you’re making Manhattans with Antica Formula (which meant I also needed to look into this Punt e Mes stuff and brandy my own cherries and . . .)
Actually, you’ve got a lot to answer for.
But, even two hours away, you’re my hero.
Thanks, Mark and Keith! You guys are making me blush, seriously.
nicely done jeffrey. a forbes mention is a nice feather in the cap.
Long time reader, first time commenter (lol), but just wanted to say huge kudos on the Forbes thing. You deserve it!
See, this makes me want to get behind a bar again. (Not that I am saying I could compare to you.) However, when I have kiddos and the place to make money in the restaurant is on the floor…
without a doubt, oregon is right up there with london, new york and san fran for innovative cocktails.
Clown or not, it is a great mention, and I am very honored. Thanks, guys!
I know that Boudreau clown. Trust me, you don’t want to be like him….
Wow- that’s a great mention indeed. Congratulations!
That is great! Congrats. You must be very honored.
